"Gubener Warraschke"

Guben was the centre of fruit production in the beginning of the 20th century.
As early as 1880, the gardening society listed 121 different kinds of apples.

At the end of the 19th century the typical domestic strain “Gubener Warraschke” came into existence. This kind of apple can be picked in late October and can be stored and enjoyed until May. Because of the geological environment of Lusatia, that apple is a resistant kind of fruit and is arable broadly. The “Warraschke” apple has a sweet and juicy taste. Even today, this kind of apple can be found in the regional allotment gardens. You can purchase a sapling of a Warraschke apple tree in local gardening firms.

Even today the apples, which are not suitable as dessert fruits, are still used for making fruit wine. During the months of September to November a cider machine, located in the district of Kaltenborn, presses those apples. Just the late fully ripe fruits are suitable for an aromatically and sweet flavour.

The original apple wine is available in the Tourist association located in the Frankfurter Straße 21 in Guben.
