Neuzelle

The holiday town of Neuzelle lies about 15 km to the north of Guben. Situated near the cycle track along the rivers Oder and Neisse, the town can be reached easily by bicycle. Even from the distance you can see the town?s symbol, the seventy-metre high church tower. Seven hundred years ago Cistercian monks built a monastery on a mountain ledge not far from the river Oder. This location had been donated in 1268 by Henry the Illustrious, Margrave of Meissen and the Eastern March. With its baroque churches, its cloister and its art treasures, it is one of only a few entirely preserved monasteries in Central Europe. The new shaped baroque monastery garden invites visitors to relax, admire the surroundings and stroll around. Outside the monastery walls is the monastery brewery. A monastery document from 1335 gives some information about the cultivation of hops, and leads one to suppose that the monks were brewing immediately after the foundation of the monastery. In 1589, the monastery brewery of Neuzelle gained brewing rights, and selling beer to the surrounding towns became one of the most important economic supports of the monastery. Today it is the only still-operating monastery brewery in the state of Brandenburg that is still brewing beer according to the old craftsman's tradition. During a guided tour through the historical brewery building, visitors can look over the brewer?s shoulder and learn more about the precious drink.
