Theatre Island

The Polish island, which is located in the river Neiße between the cities Guben and Gubin, can be reached from each city across a bridge. Once there had been a theatre on this island that was established in 1874. Although the theatre had endured the Second World War as if by a miracle, it has fallen victim to fire raisers in 1945. Today you can find a newly constructed portal on this historical place with original remains of pillars of the former theatre. A small monument to Goethe’s muse Corona Schröter, who had been born in Guben, adorned the theatre park. Some remains are still there, but the bust is considered as lost. The island in the river Neiße with its cultivated grounds and shady old trees has become a park for pedestrians and cyclists. There is also located a wooden replication of the goldfish of Vettersfelde. The original one was part of the Scythian treasure of gold, which was found in 1882 in Vetterfelde not far from Guben. Today it is situated in a Berlin museum.
