Individual fragments of medieval Guben survive on the Polish side. The city walls, gates and towers once served to defend the city and its people. The symbol of the gates is still to be found on both the Guben and Gubin city coats-of-arms. The so-called big tower (of Werder-gate, also known as Baszta Ostrowska) is the only preserved fortified tower, and can be found in Gubin beside some remains of the 15th and 16th-century city walls.
A model of one part of the city wall was completed in the 19th century, as a memorial to the old tradition.
Next to the tower of the Werder-gate is the museum chamber, which offers over 1000 exhibits on Lower Lusatian history.
