Zielona Gora

The nearest large city is Zielona Góra, located about sixty kilometres from Guben. Like Guben, Zielona Góra was known beyond its borders for cloth production and wine cultivation. Today the city is an important cultural and tourist centre. The biggest local event is the annual wine festival in September. Concerts, bustling activities in the marketplace, and a street parade with Bacchus, the god of wine, all show the unique flair of the city.

The old market place, with its classical town hall, forms the centre of the historical city. It is surrounded by renovated burgher’s houses from different epochs, and puts the visitor in mind of the medieval market place activities that once took place here. Some fragments of the city wall from 14th and 15th centuries have been preserved, and the old Bath Tower – also called the Hunger Tower – can be visited. Various churches and museums invite visitors to stroll around the city. The Lubusz Region Museum houses various collections, with 17,000 exhibits overall. Among them is an exhibition of wine cultivation and production. A historical vine-grower’s house, located in a vineyard, contains a palm garden. Here visitors can take a break amidst the tropical plants.

Today Zielona Góra is a modern, dynamic city, where many traces of the past are well preserved. A city worth exploring.
