Forst

The town of Forst is known for its tradition of rose cultivation. As a historical park ground, the rose garden from 1913 is worth a visit in every season. Visitors can admire about seven hundred kinds of roses on 40,000 rosebushes. The large diversity of trees, the romantic waterworks, and the light green of the wide lawns combine create a very unique atmosphere. The town is located thirty-five kilometres to the south of Guben, and looks back on a long history in the textile industry. The Brandenburg Textile Museum shows the town history and also tells us about the history of the textile industry. The Archives of Disappeared Places in the Horno district of the town retells using playful multi-media the story of how resettlement in Lusatia was affected by mining. Also worth seeing is the so-called Museum Barn, which shows work equipment from previous centuries. Halfway between Guben and Forst, on the Oder-Neiße cycle track, lies the village Grießen. Here is to be found a very special technical monument: built in the twenties, and shut down in 1967, the hydro-electric power station has been in operation again since 1993. In the village centre, you shouldn?t miss climbing the old "train station hill": On top there is a reinforced church under preservation order, which was built from boulders about 750 years ago, and is the oldest church in the Guben region.
