Monastery Church in Guben
This monastery church owes its names to a Benedictine monastery built in early thirteenth century and dissolved after the Reformation. The neo-Gothic church, inaugurated in 1862, was planned by master builder K. A. Flaminus, and as though by a miracle survived the destruction of the town in 1945. The monastery church is the third place of worship on this site. The first was destroyed by Hussites in 1429, and the second was pulled down in 1860 after it became structurally unsound. Up until the Second World War the monastery church was only used by the rural population. Guben’s Christians would gather in the town’s main church in what is now the town of Gubin on the other side of the Polish border. For many years it has been the heart of the town both for worship and for church music. Several years of restoration work came to an end in 2003, and now the church can once again be admired in its full glory. The monastery church’s glass windows are especially worth seeing – they were designed by the Berlin artist Helge Warme in 1999 based on the Evangelical hymn “Jesu, meine Freude” (“Jesus, my joy”) from 1653, written by Guben’s own Johann Crüger (melody) and Johann Frank (lyrics).
