Location of the former Willa Wolfa in Gubin
In 1927 the Guben cloth manufacturer Erich Wolf had the famous Bauhaus architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe create an innovative house in the mountains around the town. The Bauhaus-style country house is located at the start of a row of noteworthy buildings and today is considered the key piece among the architect’s later work. The grounds of the former villa are situated on an elevation parallel to the banks of the River Neiße. The front of the house faces west, providing a sweeping view over the river valley. In 1945 the country house burnt down completely and its ruins were pulled down. Only some remnants of the supporting walls on the slope have been preserved. Today the layout of the building has been reproduced in a green space. In 1977 a park was constructed here for the people of Gubin, called Waszkiewicz Park, of which the former villa is a key component. Today the fragments of history, the view, the tall trees and the play equipment make it a perfect spot to take a break from day-to-day life.
