Old walls, industrial monuments, and villas from the heyday of the cloth and hat makers as well as modern architecture on both sides of the Neisse river bear witness to Guben's and Gubin's eventful history and form an exciting contrast to the green oases in the heart of the town. As a result of the Second World War, Guben was divided along the Neisse river. The old town, which was heavily destroyed during the war and only partially rebuilt, is located on the now Polish side. The industrial part is today's Guben. The industrial buildings have since been put to other uses. The former hat factory has become the centre of the town with a town hall, library, event hall and music school – an exemplary testimony to the integration of old industrial buildings into the modern townscape.
