Village Church in Groß Breesen
The current church in Groß Breesen was built in 1852 on the site of its predecessor building. Surrounded by great old oaks, the church is the centre point of the village. A plaque beside the lower side entrance to the church terrain commemorates the composer Johann Crüger, who was born in Groß Breesen on April 9, 1598 and is the author of the popular hymn “Jesu, meine Freude” (“Jesus, my joy”). The church building – an elongated, right-angled hall – has a floor plan that is almost identical to that of the church in Grano. The church in Groß Breesen, however, is a plastered brick building in a round-arch style. In 1883 the church also got a new tower in place of the wooden tower that can still be seen in Grano today.
Inside the church the eye is drawn to an excellent-quality, sculpted baptism angel in front of the altar. The pulpit altar was constructed around the year 1852, while the organ, restored in 1994, originally dates back to 1820 and was the work of the Gast organ builders from Fürstenberg (Oder).
