Friedrich-Wilke-Platz
This square at the Dreieck (“triangle”) forms an intersection for Guben’s town centre. C. G. Wilke’s hat factory was active from 1862 until the 1990s. After the demise of the hat industry, the building was at first left unused. Following intensive rebuilding and renovation measures, however, the former production site now houses Guben’s town hall, the town library, the Stadt- und Industriemuseum, and the town’s “Johann Crüger” music school. The “Alte Färberei” (“Old Dyeworks”) on the site of the former hat factory is a distinctive emblem of the town with its three extractors, and now serves as a multi-functional hall that has become a popular venue for all sorts of events. Citizens of the town are able to immortalise themselves on small clinker stones on the square in front of the town hall, while the town also dedicates a stone to newborn babies as a welcome gift.
